A battery lets you keep solar power for the evening, ride through outages and, in some places, earn money helping the grid. Here is how to choose, size and use one safely.
Battery chemistries
| Chemistry | Cycle life | Safety | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lithium iron phosphate (LFP) | 6,000 to 10,000 cycles | Very stable | Best all round choice for homes and grid storage today |
| Nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) | 2,000 to 4,000 cycles | Good with proper management | More compact; common in EVs and older home batteries |
| Sodium ion | 3,000 to 6,000 cycles (early data) | Very stable | No lithium, cobalt or nickel; works well in cold |
| Flooded lead acid | 500 to 1,500 cycles | Needs ventilation | Cheap upfront, needs maintenance, heavy |
| Sealed lead acid (AGM, gel) | 500 to 1,500 cycles | Good | No watering; shorter life |
| Flow batteries | 10,000+ cycles | Very safe, non flammable electrolyte | Large, better for businesses and utilities |
| Nickel iron | Very long | Very robust | Tolerates abuse; low efficiency; niche off grid use |
Sizing a home battery
- List essential loads. Refrigerator, lights, internet, fans, medical devices, a well pump. Add their watts.
- Choose backup hours. Overnight is about 12 hours. Hurricane zones may want several days with solar recharging.
- Multiply. Essential kW times hours gives the usable kWh you need.
- Check power, not just energy. The battery’s kW rating must handle starting surges from pumps and air conditioners.
- Use the calculator. The Solar Calculator estimates battery size for your backup goal.
Most home batteries hold 5 to 15 kWh per unit and can be stacked.
AC coupled or DC coupled
DC coupled systems connect panels and battery through one hybrid inverter, which is efficient for new installs. AC coupled batteries have their own inverter and are easy to add to an existing solar system. Both work well.
Whole home or partial backup
A partial backup system powers a critical loads panel with your chosen circuits. Whole home backup needs more battery capacity and a larger inverter, especially for central air conditioning. Smart panels and load controllers can automatically shed big loads during an outage so a smaller battery lasts longer.
Ways batteries save or earn money
- Self consumption: store midday solar for evening use when exports earn little.
- Time of use savings: avoid buying expensive peak power.
- Demand charge reduction for businesses.
- Virtual power plants: some utilities pay you to let them draw on your battery during peak events.
- Avoided losses: spoiled food, lost work or a generator you no longer need.
Safety
- Choose a certified system (for example UL 9540 listed in North America) and a qualified installer.
- Follow manufacturer clearances and local fire codes on where batteries may go. Garages and exterior walls are common locations.
- Keep batteries out of direct afternoon sun and within their temperature range.
- Never mix old and new lead acid batteries, and ventilate flooded lead acid banks because they release hydrogen while charging.
Lifespan, warranties and recycling
Home battery warranties usually run 10 years, often with a guarantee of 60 to 70 percent capacity remaining. Read the throughput limit too. Lithium batteries are recyclable: specialist recyclers in the United States, Canada and Brazil recover lithium, nickel, cobalt and copper. Lead acid batteries are among the most recycled products in the world; always return them to a collection point.
